What do you have? | Toronto Photographer

“Focus on revealing what you already have.” Simply put, isn’t it? But we can so easily get caught up in all that we think we don’t have. All the we think we need. And that then becomes a very, very slippery slope of ‘what if’s’ and ‘should have’s’. Focus on right now, and what you can do right now that you enjoy, that makes you happy. It doesn’t have to be complex, but you should really do it because it makes you happy. Talking with a friend, they had finally bought something that they couldn’t enjoy as a child and though now, it was a bit of a splurge and they still don’t have enough time (make time!) to enjoy it, they are doing it. Focus on all the little gifts of health and friends and a roof over your head. Focusing on what you already have, might just take you where you might never dreamed you’d go.

Things to do while waiting for the train to pass | Toronto Photographer

Take pictures and make a short timelapse of the train passing. I was on my way back from my morning Family Mini Shoot sessions at High Park and took what I thought would be a short cut on Junction Rd. But the train came an it was good. It forced me to wait and just be for awhile. And my sessions at the park? Well, they were awesome! I love hanging with families and making great pictures. Such a great combo. I even had some time to take a mini nature walk and take some throwback style nature photos, that I used to do when I first started shooting. ‘Twas a good morning.

Barn’s Burnt Down… Now I Can See the Moon | Toronto Photographer

I missed the Supermoon last Sunday night, as most of us in the immediate Toronto area did. It was overcast and we just had no visibility. I know, ’cause I went out driving around in my car hoping for a shot from a highway overpass with a good clear view, but no luck. But there were good views north of the city and west in Hamilton as captured here by Anita Thomas at Urbanmoon Photography. I really love the moon. Did I mention that? Like it literally takes my breath away. When I see it rising and it’s just HUGE and beautiful, it’s such a reminder that we’re just on a rock and there’s other stuff out there. I want to try and start photographing it. Oh man. Did I just say that out loud? Yes, I’m putting it out there. And this is just for me. Just because I love it. I’m hoping that I will do it. To help me achieve this I’ve 1. marked my calendar with the Moon phases in Toronto, for the rest of the month and 2. I’m going to travel with my tripod, back-up camera (the Canon 50D) and my 55-250mm lens in the car with me. That way, I’ll never have an excuse to say I can’t get the shot. The image below was shot this morning through my apartment window, just before 8am. I happened to look out and see that the moon was still up. So I decided to try for a shot. This was shot at 1/13, f32 iso 400 and 250mm focal length (approx 400mm with the crop sensor factored in). I’m excited to see how much better a quality of image I’ll be able to achieve on the next full moon, shot outdoor when the moon is rising and much larger in the sky.

Hello October. Let’s Get Psyched Up!

Sometimes you have to psych yourself up. I haven’t ridden my bike or done any physical activity of consequence in 2 weeks. Did you hear me? TWO WEEKS!! That’s crazy. What’s crazier though, is how easy it is to fall out of routine and let a new routine take over. That happened to me, through no fault or intention of my own – but it happened. And now I’m sitting here, editing, getting stuff done and thinking about how I’m going to eat dinner soon and after I eat dinner, go for a bike ride. The action begins first in your mind. You almost don’t realise that you’re thinking, “don’t move, don’t move, don’t move, just sit here” until a eureka thought pops in and says, “it’s time to get off your ass and move!”. Maybe it’s because it’s the first of the month. Hello October! And with that, another feeling of re-starting. 31 days to get it done. This month will be good. Because I said it. Because I thought it and will keep thinking it and then action-ing it. Because action is way better than in-action. Hello October, let’s do this.
